What kind of smoker are you? Do you like dressing to the nines and lighting up in a leather chair near the fireplace of an English parlor? Or would you prefer puffing on a hammock between two palm trees wearing Bermuda shorts? If the answer is the latter, then there’s a new Trinidad brand that’s meant to appeal to the casual connoisseur who’s more comfortable in flip-flops than Gucci loafers. Altadis U.S.A. has collaborated with “island lifestyle” brand Tommy Bahama for a line called Trinidad by Tommy Bahama—Island Collection, a series of cigars that encompasses the ethos of both companies.

“Blending the rich Caribbean heritage of Trinidad cigars with the laid-back luxury of Tommy Bahama, this collection embodies a new standard in refined relaxation,” Altadis says in an official release.

With its multiple lines of splashy, island-inspired clothing and cigar accessories, Tommy Bahama is well known to many cigar lovers for its casual approach to smoking. Trinidad, on the other hand, has been cultivated to represent refinement in the world of premium cigars—both Cuban and non-Cuban versions. This collaboration is a union of both cultures.

Trinidad by Tommy Bahama—Island Collection was conceived by Rafael Nodal, vice president of product capability for Tabacalera USA (Altadis U.S.A.’s parent company) and Nicaraguan cigarmaker A.J. Fernandez. Like Altadis’ Trinidad Espíritu line, these new Trinidads are made in Nicaragua by Fernandez, but this particular blend consists solely of Nicaraguan tobacco, all of which was grown on Fernandez’s farms.

The cigars are intended to be medium in body, and come in three island-themed sizes: Harbor, measuring 5 inches by 52 ring gauge ($16.50); Breeze, at 6 by 54 ($17.50); and a 6-by-60 called Marlin ($18.50). All are packaged in 20-count boxes and should be heading to retailers in September for a late-summer launch. A four-pack of the Harbor will also be available for $66 each.

“Trinidad has always stood for heritage, craftsmanship and depth of character,” says Oliver Hyams, vice president of marketing for Altadis U.S.A. “This collaboration with Tommy Bahama allows us to translate that tradition into an experience that’s equally about lifestyle—elegant, relaxed and inspired.”

A line of Trinidad-branded accessories from Tommy Bahama will also be released to complement the new cigar line.
